Understanding Your Birth Chart
By Planets
The Sun: (Ruler of Leo)
Planet of Self
Known as the luminary and the star, the Sun represents the self. The Sun is our basic identity, representing self-realization. Our personality. Our ego. The spirit and what it is that makes the individual unique. It is our identity and our face to the world. The sun also relates to creative ability and the power of the individual to meet the challenges of everyday life. It is also our “adult” part of us that blocks our “inner child,” to reasons things out and make a final decision.
The Moon: (Ruler of Cancer)
Ruler of Emotions
Also known as a luminary, the Moon is goddess-like being that it symbolizes mother and the relationship between woman and child. It is responsive, receptive, and reflective. Mood swings, instinct, how we feel about things and how our feelings affect others are all influenced by the Moon. How do we instinctively react or respond to problems? What do we feel we need for a sense of security? When you’re misunderstood, it’s your Moon-like nature being expressed through your Sun sign that you feel is betrayed. When you know but can’t find the right way to do so, it’s your Moon that knows and your Sun that refuses to react in harmony. The Sun gives us our spirit whereas, the Moon gives us our soul. The Moon touches us more deeply than most planets.
Mercury: (Ruler of Gemini)
Planet of Communication
Mercury is the messenger in Astrology as it is in Mythology. Communication, intellect and awareness are all within Mercury’s realm—logic and reasoning, our way of thinking, and how we create and express our thought processes. Things happen fast here. Mercury is about a quick wit, quick thinking, possibilities, opinions, reasoning and the ability to rationalize things. How do we handle nervous energy? How do we express and communicate our thoughts? How do we approach others and information in order to learn and exchange ideas?
Venus: (Ruler of Libra & Taurus)
Planet of Love & Money
Venus is the Goddess of Love and represents two main areas of our life: love and money. Venus is all about pleasure, especially pleasure shared with someone else. Venus concerns itself with love, romance and harmony in our emotional attachments such as relationships, marriage, friendships and business partnerships. Content to spread happiness and tenderness all while teaching us how to love and appreciate others and the things that we have; socializing with and relating to others are important to Venus. Beauty is also strongly associated with Venus. Venus encourages us to indulge our senses and revel in the beauty of our world by appreciating the exquisite nature of things. It’s a sensual, not necessarily sexual, world as far as Venus is concerned.
Mars: (Ruler of Aries)
Planet of Passion
Mars is the God of War and also the planet of energy, action, and desire. Mars speaks to our individual power and confident expression and commands you to stand up, be noticed and get things done— no more sitting or waiting on the sidelines! Ambition and competition are also within Mars’s realm so whether it’s at work or everyday life Mars encourages us to face challenges and to be our best or even better. It’s important to note that Mars’s energy can be constructive or destructive being that Mars rules our animal instincts for aggression, anger, and survival. Our sexual desires come under the rule of Mars. With Mars, there is no contemplation before action.
Jupiter: (Ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces)
Planet of Luck
The King of Gods, Jupiter is the planet of plenty. Jupiter is the thinking-person’s planet and the guardian of the abstract mind, this planet rules higher learning, and encourages us to explore ideas both intellectually and spiritually. Luck and good fortune are associated with Jupiter. The position of Jupiter by sign reveals how we express our generosity and tolerance. Jupiter also shows how we go about trusting others and improving our lives.
Saturn: (Ruler of Capricorn and Aquarius)
Planet of Karma
Saturn is associated with restriction and limitation. Where Jupiter expands, Saturn constricts. Saturn knows the limits of time and matter. It reminds us of our boundaries, our responsibilities, and our commitments. Essentially, Saturn brings definition to our lives. This planet, through its placement and connections in our charts, makes us aware of the need for self-control, boundaries, and limits. Saturn doesn’t make things easy. Saturn commands us to get to work and to work hard. Discipline and responsibility are important to this planet, yet if we’re eager to conquer the world, that’s okay, too. Saturn’s lessons help us grow, mature, and refine ourselves.
Uranus: (Ruler of Aquarius)
Planet of Rebellion
The energies of Uranus are exhilarating and crammed with change. When Uranus is not developed it reacts but when Uranus’ natives are truly in tune with its energies, Uranus can be highly intuitive. It represents the spark of intuition that spurs invention. Where we find Uranus in our chart is where we see some refusal to blend in with others, situations and some erratic life patterns. Uranus brings with it a new way of looking at things, and its approach is best met with an expanded consciousness.
Neptune: (Ruler of Pisces)
Planet of Illusions
God of the Sea, Neptune is considered a planet of inspiration, dreams, psychic receptivity, illusion, and confusion. Neptune also rules spirituality, and all things subtle. Neptune invites us to let its energy wash over us and to use a meditative state to gain insights and heightened awareness. As well, it is a planet of mercy and compassion. The more negative manifestations of Neptune include deception, trickery, deceit, guilt, and addiction.
Pluto: (Ruler of Scorpio)
Planet of Power
God of the Underworld, Pluto represents subconscious forces, ruling all that is “below the surface”. This planet is about transformation, regeneration and rebirth. Pluto asks us to transcend that which we know, redeem ourselves in the process, and come out stronger as a result. Where we find Pluto in the chart is where we either seek change and transformation, or have it thrust upon us if we refuse to accept our deepest needs. If we fear Pluto’s energies, or our “dark” side, destructiveness (both directed at ourselves or others) is a byproduct.
